Acceptable Use Policy

What this is

This policy sits under our Terms of Service and describes what you may not do on curltact. It is part of those Terms, and breaking it is breaking them. We keep it on its own page because the list of ways people find to misuse a public text file grows over time, and we would rather update this than reissue the whole contract.

The examples below are illustrative, not exhaustive. Something can be unacceptable without appearing on this page.

Content you may not publish

Do not engrave, link to, or serve anything that:

• is unlawful where you are, or where we are;
• is, or links to, child sexual abuse material or content that sexualises or exploits minors. We report this to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and to law enforcement, and we terminate the account without notice;
• infringes someone's copyright, trademark, or other rights (see our Copyright & DMCA Policy);
• is defamatory, or is a knowing falsehood about a real person;
• harasses, bullies, threatens, or incites violence against anyone;
• promotes hatred against people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or a similar characteristic;
• publishes another person's private information without their consent, including a home address, phone number, government identifier, or financial details;
• is sexually explicit;
• advertises or facilitates the sale of illegal goods or services;
• contains malware, or is designed to phish, defraud, or mislead whoever curls it.

Identity and names

• No impersonation. Do not present yourself as another person, company, or brand, or imply an endorsement or affiliation that does not exist. Clearly labelled parody is a judgment call, and the judgment is ours.
• No squatting or hoarding. Names are for use. Do not claim names in order to resell them, to block someone else, or to accumulate them.
• No trading. Do not sell, buy, transfer, or solicit payment for a name.
• One person, one account. Do not create extra accounts to get around a limit, a reclaim, or a suspension.

Technical conduct

Do not:

• probe, scan, or test the security of the Service without our written permission (see our Security Policy for how to report something you have found);
• attempt to gain access to an account, card, or system that is not yours;
• interfere with or overload the Service, including denial-of-service attacks, or automated requests at a volume a person would not generate;
• use the Service to send unsolicited bulk messages, or as infrastructure for a spam or phishing operation;
• bypass, disable, or interfere with any rate limit, reserved-name list, tier limit, or paywall;
• scrape the card namespace wholesale, or use the Service to build a contact database. Curling a card is the point. Enumerating everyone's is not.

Commercial use

A card can be about your business. That is fine and expected. What is not fine is using the Service itself as a product: reselling access, wrapping it in your own paid service, or presenting curltact as your own. Cosmetics are licensed to you for personal, non-commercial display on your own card, as set out in the Terms.

How we enforce this

We do not pre-screen cards and we are under no obligation to monitor anything. When we do act, we may, in our sole discretion and without notice: remove or edit content, hide or stop rendering a card, reclaim a name, suspend or terminate an account, refuse future service, or report the matter to law enforcement.

Repeat copyright infringement is the one place we do bind ourselves to a rule: three copyright notices we act on against an account and the account is terminated, sooner if the infringement is blatant. Everywhere else we choose the response. There is no ladder we are obliged to climb and no warning you are entitled to first. Termination for a breach of this policy does not entitle you to a refund. As set out in the Terms, we may also remove content or reclaim a name for any reason or for no reason at all, so nothing here limits that.

Reporting something

If you find a card that breaks these rules, email contact@curltact.com with the card address, for example curltact.holtzhost.com/some-name, and what the problem is. We read reports. We are not obliged to reply to one, to act on one, or to tell you what we decided.
